Originally the headquarters of the William Ewart linen empire, Bedford Square, an important urban block in the centre of the city, has lain vacant for some considerable time. A redevelopment masterplan for the site was prepared in the early 2000’s, which proposed the creation of a new civic space, surrounded by mixed use buildings of varying heights. The first element of the masterplan, a headquarters office building for the government agency, Invest Northern Ireland, was completed in November 2005, under a PPP procurement route. A multi storey tower rising over 100m, becoming the tallest building in the city received full planning permission in 2006. The refurbishment of the listed office building fronting Bedford Street, will form the final part of the redevelopment re-establishing the square at the heart of Belfast’s commercial district.
